In June, the Port of New York and New Jersey experienced a month of strong growth, with total volume increasing by 13.5%.
The port handled 708,935 TEUs (395,219 containers) compared to 624,512 TEUs (346,850 containers) in June 2023. This boost brings the year-to-date total through June to 4,210,611 TEUs (2,336,088 containers).
June marked the fourth consecutive month that the port surpassed 700,000 TEUs and the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The port also retained its position as the second busiest in the nation for loaded cargo during the first half of the year.
Imports in June rose by 12.1% from the previous year, reaching 366,099 TEUs (203,555 containers) compared to 326,681 TEUs (181,496 containers) in June 2023.
From January through June 2024, imported loads totalled 2,158,055 TEUs (1,199,783 containers), reflecting a 13.7% increase from the 1,897,496 TEUs (1,056,540 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023.
June exports totalled 112,621 TEUs (60,527 containers), representing a 10.9% increase from the 101,509 TEUs (54,792 containers) recorded in June 2023.
Furthermore, exported loads from January through June 2024 reached 683,522 TEUs (366,746 containers), a 4.9% rise from the 651,332 TEUs (352,444 containers) reported during the same period in 2023.
The port also saw a 17.7% increase in export empties, with 228,575 TEUs recorded in June compared to 194,154 TEUs the previous year.
Export empties totalled 1,356,548 TEUs from January through June 2024, a 14.8% increase over the 1,181,629 TEUs posted in 2023. Import empties rose by 26.3% during the same period compared to the previous year.
A total of 52,474 containers were moved by rail in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Despite a slight decrease of 1.6% from June 2023, rail volume for the first half of 2024 was 4.8% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
Additionally, June saw a significant 10.2% increase in auto imports compared to the previous year, with 33,953 vehicles passing through the port. Auto volume for January through June was 10.9% higher than in the first half of 2023.
